Luke 2:13-15 – Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
Just one angel would not have been adequate to declare the glory of God. So, after the initial announcement, the angel is joined by a great multitude of the heavenly host and all together they make the hillside resound with the praises of God! They declare the glory of the One Who sits in the highest seat of authority and honor in the entire universe! They brought to earth a little taste of heaven that night and for a few moments God was honored on earth as He is in heaven. Revelation 4 describes for us the Throne Room and the ongoing declarations of God’s glory in heaven. In verses 8-11 we read that there are four living creatures that each had six wings and were covered with eyes all around, even under their wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."
If the original announcement by the one angel had not been enough to influence action by the shepherds, this angelic chorus certainly heightened their incentive. What could have been more persuasive to move people of free will to investigate and witness the current events that had been made known to them by HBS (the Heavenly Broadcast System)? It surely seemed to do the job with the shepherds because it caused them to converse among themselves and they agreed that they should go to Living Nativity in Bethlehem. Oh, may it still move people to investigate the heaven-sent message revealing God’s plan of redemption! Then, having witnessed the Truth, may we join the heavenly host:
Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! (Glory to God in the highest)
Come to Bethlehem and see, Christ whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo! Gloria, in excelsis Deo! (Glory to God in the highest)
